Mott School,
a K-5 school, serving poor Hispanics and Blacks, implemented the Balanced
Curriculum in Reading/Language Arts after working with the School Development
Program (SDP) for a year. During the 1999 – 2000 school year staff
wrote the curriculum and proceeded with implementation during the 2000 — 2001
school year. Implementation was monitored by the full time SDP Coordinator.
Before implementation, 24% of their students passed the ESPA (the New
Jersey State Test) at grade four. After implementation 75% of their students passed.
